What is it?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry focused on correcting teeth and jawbone irregularities. It uses devices like brackets, clear aligners and retainers to improve alignment, bite and appearance.
Beyond aesthetics, orthodontics enhances oral hygiene, reduces the risk of cavities and periodontal disease, and improves chewing and speech.
Good oral hygiene practices help prevent complications that can arise from the difficulty of cleaning around brackets, ensuring orthodontic treatment is effective and keeps teeth and gums healthy.
Description
Currently, there is a high percentage of the population with dental malocclusions and misalignments that require orthodontic treatment with removable or fixed appliances. Its effect allows the restoration of the functionality of the mouth, while improving dental and facial aesthetics and, therefore, increasing the quality of life of the patient.
Cleaning with orthodontics
Maintain thorough oral hygiene ensuring proper interproximal cleaning suited for orthodontic patients.
Use a toothbrush with a V-shaped filament profile to adapt to the contours of orthodontic appliances. Pair it with toothpaste and mouthwash specifically formulated for orthodontic care.
Apply soft wax to fixed appliances to prevent the formation of aphthous ulcers.
For removable appliances, use effervescent cleansing tablets to remove food particles and bacterial plaque from the appliance.
Avoid hard foods, such as nuts, toast and seeds.
Steer clear of sticky and/or sugary foods like gum and candy.
Be mindful of fruit pits and fibrous vegetables.
Associated problems
Despite advances in orthodontic treatments, reducing the common discomforts that can arise during the process remains a key challenge. These discomforts can impact both the success of the treatment and patients' quality of life.
Gingival inflammation, caries and halitosis: Due to the difficulty of removing bacterial plaque in highly retentive areas, such as those created by orthodontic appliances.
Pain and/or discomfort: These occur due to the pressure exerted during chewing or when clenching the teeth tightly.
Ulcerations: Caused by friction between orthodontic appliances and soft tissues, making eating, and in some cases speaking, difficult.
