Perio·Aid® Symposium on Saturday, October 28. The Perio·Aid® “Connecting Through Science” Symposium aimed to discuss, debate and inform on the relationship between Periodontics and other dental disciplines, all guided by international experts in the field, doctors Marco Cune, Michel de Cleen, Kamy Malekian, Kathrin Becker and Ausra Ramanauskaite.
The event, held at the modernista Sant Pau Campus in Barcelona, had a great turnout. 200 professionals from the world of dentistry attended the Symposium, interested in learning about the latest developments in the field of Periodontics.
Doctors Xavier Calvo and Andrés Pascual, who chaired the event, welcomed those attending and presented the speakers, thanking Perio·Aid® for its initiative in organising the Symposium.
The first lecture was given by Dr. Marco Cune, entitled “White is the new Grey: Zirconium in transmucosal applications” focused on the uses of Metal-Free Restorative Dentistry.
Broadly speaking, the professor explained the benefits and differences between titanium and zirconium implant abutments. The speaker said that in transmucosal areas the perceived differences are matchless. Zirconium and titanium show the same response in soft tissues, the same amount of bacterial microbiota and the same clinical parameters.
In addition, Dr. Cune emphasised that zirconium implant abutments show no signs of degradation one year after clinical loading, while individualised titanium implant abutments may be too smooth.
Next, Dr. Michel de Cleen presented his lecture entitled “The Endo-Perio relationship, current concepts and clinical implications” in which he highlighted the importance of the use of the periodontal probe by endodontists.
He also noted that pulpal tests should be part of periodontal diagnostics and, finally, that treatment monitoring is as important as the treatment itself.
Dr. Kamy Malekian tackled the area of alignment techniques. In his speech entitled “Ortho-Perio Strategies in the treatment of periodontal patients with aligner techniques” and through the presentation of different clinical cases, he demonstrated that aligner techniques allow for individual 3D planning for each tooth.
Specifically, through the application of 3D software you can measure the total distance that each tooth must travel and the exact amount of proclination, extrusion, intrusion or torque.
Finally, Dr. Malekian recommended performing periodontal check-ups on the patient every 3-4 months, taking advantage of the same visit for the orthodontic examination.
Finally, Dr. Kathrin Becker and Dr. Ausra Ramanauskaite discussed “Available peri-implant treatments and their indications, according to current scientific evidence.”
During the lecture, they focused on surgical resection therapy and pointed out that it was effective in the long-term for cases of advanced peri-implantitis. In addition, they explained that clinical outcomes may be affected by factors such as implant surface features or the configuration of bone defects.
Finally, they pointed out the need for the interval between visits to be between 5-6 months, although, whenever possible, the frequency should be individualised for each patient.
