THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERIODONTITIS AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE SPURS GREAT INTEREST AMONG HYGIENISTS

The latest series of training sessions addressed to dental hygienists focused on how cardiovascular problems can be prevented by controlling periodontal health.
The aim of this course was to make this relationship known, taking into account that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, and that individuals with severe periodontitis are two to four times more likely to suffer from acute myocardial infarction, stroke and peripheral vascular disease, according to existing epidemiological evidence.
The course, which was given in 21 Spanish cities, gathered over 2,000 dental hygienist participants.
