It has been five years since the launch of Perio & Cardio, a project driven by the collaboration between the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), the World Heart Federation (WHF), and Dentaid. This initiative highlights the connection between periodontal disease and cardiovascular diseases and offers healthcare professionals advice on how to address these conditions comprehensively.

September 25th 2024. In the context of World Heart Day, Dentaid emphasizes the importance of good oral health in contributing to better cardiovascular health.
Over 3.5 billion people worldwide suffer from oral diseases, yet the majority of the population is unaware of the connection between oral and general health. Gum disease is a chronic condition that may aggravate cardiovascular disease and requires lifelong attention and professional care.
Given that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally(1) and that, according to epidemiological evidence, individuals with periodontitis are 25% more likely to develop coronary heart disease(2), early diagnosis, prevention, and joint treatment (by both dentists and physicians) of cardiovascular problems and periodontitis are of utmost importance. For this reason, the Perio & Cardio project was created based on evidence-based science and the conclusions of the Perio-Cardio Workshop held by the EFP and the World Heart Federation, in collaboration with Dentaid, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year.
Periodontitis is an inflammatory and infectious disease caused by bacteria in the mouth, leading to constant inflammation of the gums. This condition triggers pro-inflammatory effects, alters the immune system, promotes thrombosis, and disrupts heart function. These biological mechanisms explain the link between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease. Inflammation in the gums raises levels of prothrombotic and pro-inflammatory markers, the same substances that would affect the vascular system.
In this regard, Dentaid experts aim to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining good oral health to take care of our overall and cardiovascular health. Dr. Vanessa Blanc, Head of Translational Development at Dentaid, notes: “The link between heart attacks and poor oral health was first proposed in the 1980s. Since then, numerous studies have concluded a positive relationship between periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, the presence of many oral pathogens found in cardiovascular lesions contributes to the progression of these diseases.
Caring for oral health has a very beneficial effect on cardiovascular health. Maintaining proper oral hygiene reduces bacterial plaque in the oral cavity, which reduces local inflammation in the gums and, subsequently, systemic inflammation.
Dentaid has been working for over 40 years to improve oral health and has intensified its efforts in education and outreach to raise awareness among healthcare professionals and the general public about the connection between gum health and other systemic conditions. In the case of cardiovascular disease, projects like Perio & Cardio aim to promote an integrated approach to health care.
