Dentaid presents an oral health briefing paper to debunk hoaxes on World Gum Day
Barcelona, May 8th, 2024 — Dentaid, a Spanish company specialising in oral health, presented a decalogue on gum health this year in honour of Gum Health Day, observed on May 12th. With this document, titled "OralHealthWithoutFakeNews," the company seeks to counter misinformation and misconceptions surrounding gum health. It does so by presenting data, scientific evidence, and oral hygiene advice aimed at dispelling these myths.
Ten facts and realities are presented to address various pathologies, aiming to prevent the normalisation of conditions that could potentially lead to more serious illnesses, both within the oral cavity and in its connection to the rest of the body. This Decalogue debunks certain falsehoods, such as “gum bleeding during brushing is normal”, by informing that it may signal an underlying pathology and should not be dismissed as normal. Similarly, myths such as tooth loss following periodontal disease or the assumption that a visit to the dentist is unnecessary if gums appear healthy are also addressed and refuted.
Half of the population suffers from gingivitis and 10% end up with periodontitis, a disease that is the most frequent cause of tooth loss and which, in addition, has a two-way relationship with systemic diseases such as diabetes. Despite their high prevalence, the good news is that 90% of the time, gum problems can be prevented. Júlia Sáez, MSL in the medical department of Dentaid, states: "With this Decalogue, Dentaid aims to dispel misconceptions about gum health by providing scientifically grounded answers that clarify concepts. Gum health is directly related to general health, and prioritising prevention enables us to lead healthier and higher-quality lives.”
Gum diseases are chronic inflammatory conditions, and scientific evidence shows that they are associated with important systemic health problems, such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases or even neurodegenerative diseases.
Regarding personal well-being, people are generally unaware of the great impact healthy gums have on appearance and self-esteem until they are affected by a gingival tissue-related disease.
