What appears in the mouth can have an effect on the rest of the body, and what happens in the rest of the body can affect the mouth.
Pregnancy is one of the situations in which this interaction between oral health and general well-being is really brought home, since the hormonal changes that occur in gestation bring about a certain propensity for periodontal disease, which can, in turn, have considerable repercussions on the body and cause adverse outcomes, such as premature or underweight babies, and preeclampsia.
The dangerous association between periodontal disease and pregnancy is the subject discussed in the "Current Research" section, which addresses the scientific evidence available to date in this field.
Fortunately, there are ways to prevent and treat periodontal disease during pregnancy, as explained in the "DENTAID Solutions" section, where the importance of performing proper oral hygiene with the most appropriate products for a particular situation are detailed and commented on, along with the treatment that can be applied at the dental clinic once periodontal disease has developed.
On the other hand, a possible link between oral pathologies such as periodontitis, and certain degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's has been suspected for years. This hypothesis seems to have been confirmed by recent studies. The issue is discussed in "The Voice of SEPA”, announcing a summer course at the Madrid Complutense University dedicated to the subject.
In recent years, cardiovascular conditions have also been associated with periodontal diseases, a relationship that Dr José Ramón González Juanatey talks to us about in the "Interview" section. This prestigious specialist in the field of cardiology also explains how to improve collaboration between dentists and cardiologists to benefit patients’ health.
The "Aula DENTAID" section takes stock of the XVII Course in Periodontal and Dental Implant Research Methodology given at the University of Oviedo and sponsored by DENTAID, and reports on an upcoming course for hygienists on their role in orthodontic treatment.
The influence of salivary pH on the onset of caries and on oral health in general is the central theme of the "The Hygienist’s View” section, while "The Voice of SECIB" investigates the existence of genetic markers that may act as predictors of peri-implantitis.
Continuing in the field of dental implants, the "Study" section focuses on research into the formation of biofilm on titanium surfaces with antibacterial coatings, such as those used in implant dentistry.
Finally, the "News" section gathers the most interesting intelligence on research, training and new products, including the participation of DENTAID in the latest meetings of the SEPA (Spanish Society of Periodontology and Osseointegration) and the SEEO (Spanish Society of Oncology Nursing) as well as DENTAID technology haprepair, based on the incorporation of active hydroxyapatite, and the Perio·Next initiative, the first periodontics clinical case contest promoted by Perio·Aid®, among others.
