Solutions for improving mouths affected by smoking Medications are available for helping patients moderate their smoking habit or quit altogether, and although healthcare professionals should keep this in mind, other measures also exist, such as more frequent dental check-ups, which can be of great help3.
Oral hygiene should be performed meticulously in order to minimise the risk for periodontitis or of oral infection4. The VITIS® gingival product line is specially formulated to offer greater antiseptic efficacy, thanks to its formula containing cetylpyridinium chloride and zinc lactate, and to strengthen gums with provitamin B5 and permethol.
It is also advisable to stress how lifestyle, including physical activity and diet, can affect health. More specifically, an increase in the consumption of foods rich in vitamin E (seed oils, margarine, nuts, whole grains, fish and egg yolk) and in vitamin C.
Smokers should eat at least two citric fruits per day (kiwis, oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, strawberries, mangos, papaya, melon, tomatoes), as these help fight the damaging effects of free radicals present from smoking. In this regard, a very interesting line of products known as VITIS® antiage exists, containing antioxidants, vitamin C and vitamin E for neutralising free radicals.
Lastly, regular smokers experience more tooth staining, which can be reduced considerably with the use of VITIS® whitening products. This product line offers a toothpaste and a mouthwash containing the all new and revolutionary hydroxyapatite nanoparticle technology. These nanoparticles have the capacity to react with tooth enamel by filling small imperfections, and making teeth smoother and whiter. These products also contain polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to capture chromogens, a phosphate system to reduce calculus formation and perlite to brighten.
