The
VITIS® anticaries range offers a great business opportunity for the pharmacist,
because on one hand, anticaries products constitute the second best selling
category on the market for oral hygiene in pharmacies, and on the other hand,
tooth decay is the most widespread disease after the common cold, with a
prevalence of between 92% and 94% in people over 35 years of age.
And
thanks to the efforts in research and development of new products and
formulations, the VITIS® anticaries range of toothpastes and mouthwash repairs
tooth enamel and creates a protective layer resistant to acid attack.
This
range is revolutionary in the world of tooth decay prevention thanks to the
composition of its products, attacking the formation of caries at different
levels. Of the ingredients in the formula, first of all there is an outstanding
concentration of xylitol (10%), which is extremely effective at reducing the
formation of dental biofilm (bacterial plaque), decreasing the production of
acid, and stimulating the saliva thus neutralizing the pH, which favours
remineralisation.
Secondly,
the presence of fluoride is important as the most widely used element for the
prevention of tooth decay. Fluoride helps enamel remineralisation, and when
combined with hydroxyapatite nanoparticles, promotes the formation of
fluorapatite, strengthening the enamel and increasing its resistance to dental
erosion.
Thirdly,
the clear advantage of this product range is that its products are made based
on DENTAID nanorepair® technology, an innovative formulation including
nanoparticles of hydroxyapatite (a natural element in teeth) in the right
concentration to perform the following functions:
• Repairing cracks and grooves though to the
interior of the damaged surface, integrating stably and naturally within the
tooth's enamel.
• Creating a protective layer resistant to
attack from acids in food.
• Together with fluoride, form fluorapatite
crystals which are less soluble in acid than hydroxyapatite, making the tooth more
resistant to erosion.
The
role of the pharmacist is key as many people are unaware of the different oral
hygiene products available to combat tooth decay. Active recommendation of
anticaries products is essential to obtaining good results regarding
prevention. It should not be forgotten that over 90% of the population will
experience tooth decay at some time in their lives, so prevention is necessary
for all alike.
And
as it is a reversible process in the early stages, it can be controlled and
prevented by chemical and physical means, including protective factors.
Therefore, in addition to applying proper oral hygiene after each meal, it is
also important to consider these simple tips to prevent tooth decay:
• Stick to a varied and balanced diet.
• Limit consumption of sugars, especially
between meals, and avoid prolonged exposure to them.
• Avoid food that clings and may get stuck
between the teeth.
• Chew (sugar-free) gum to stimulate the
production of saliva. Remember saliva takes food debris left in the mouth with
it and neutralises acids produced by bacterial plaque, as well as providing the
teeth with calcium and phosphate in a process known as remineralisation.
• See the dentist at least once a year.
Fluoride is a well-known anticaries
component. Therefore, virtually all toothpastes—including those sold at
supermarkets— contain it. However, the VITIS® anticaries range
offers added value over the rest thanks to its innovative composition and its
mechanism of action, on top of the many studies supporting its effectiveness.
This all makes the product line an excellent
opportunity to attract new customers to the pharmacy. To sum up, a good
recommendation means a satisfied customer, so the efficacy of VITIS® anticaries
turns into a unique opportunity to build the pharmacy's customer loyalty.
