Frequently associated with hyposalivation, xerostomia affects the quality of life of patients, in addition to affecting both their oral and their general health.
To treat it, it is necessary to keep to certain daily habits, such as maintaining an adequate intake of water throughout the day, moistening the lips, avoiding dry, irritating and spicy foods, and above all, performing rigorous daily oral hygiene with specific products for xerostomia, such as the dentaid® Xeros range.
Xerostomia can be treated with products that hydrate the oral cavity—saliva substitutes or moisturising agents—and for those patients with active salivary glands, with products that stimulate saliva production—sialogogues.
dentaid® Xeros is specifically formulated to treat xerostomia in both ways, which is why it is made up of two ranges of products: one that is moisturising, and the other stimulating.
Moisturising range
The dentaid® Xeros moisturising range is made up of products that hydrate and moisten the oral cavity while protecting against decay. This includes toothpaste, mouthwash and moisturising gel.
The toothpaste and mouthwash are indicated for the daily oral hygiene of those with xerostomia and they contain active ingredients betaine (a long-lasting moisturiser), xylitol (which hydrates, balances pH and helps prevent caries), allantoin (which protects the gums) and sodium fluoride (an anti-caries agent).
Furthermore, it is important to note that their formulation does not include alcohol or sodium lauryl sulfate, which can irritate the mucosa, aggravating the xerostomia.
The gel is indicated to attain long-lasting moisturisation. Its topical application is recommended for the entire oral mucosa, especially at night. In addition to fluoride, betaine, and xylitol, it includes aloe vera to protect the oral mucosa that may be damaged because of the xerostomia.
Stimulating range
The dentaid® Xeros stimulating range is indicated to stimulate salivation naturally in those persons with functional salivary glands, and has shown significant increases in salivation in those with drug-induced xerostomia, ageing, Sjögren syndrome, etc.
The range features chewing gum, tablets and spray, which also makes it easy to apply during the day.
The main active ingredients in this range are malic acid (a sialogogue), xylitol and sodium fluoride. In addition, it has a buffer system to prevent salivary pH from dropping, which can cause enamel erosion.
The combination of both dentaid® Xeros ranges helps to moisturise the oral cavity and stimulate the natural production of saliva, thus improving the quality of life of patients with xerostomia and preventing the onset of oral pathologies.
