There are over a thousand different bacterial species in the mouth, all developing and multiplying on the different oral tissues. These bacteria build up in a matrix of aggregates known as bacterial plaque, or biofilm. In addition to other health factors, leaving these bacteria unchecked can lead to several oral pathologies including tooth decay, gingivitis, periodontitis, halitosis, and others.
To attain and keep good oral health, it is important to maintain this biofilm in check. Along with proper brushing and the use of products for interproximal hygiene, the daily use of a range of toothpastes and mouthwashes with a formulation that suits the needs of each oral cavity is essential.
It is not enough to use just any toothpaste and/or mouthwash to complement brushing. Everyone must choose those that are specifically formulated to meet their own personal needs, to get the greatest possible benefits. Thus, before prescribing a toothpaste or a mouthwash, it is important to examine all patients to be able to choose the products that best suit their needs.
