Perio•Aid® is a formula that contains a combination of chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride in two different concentrations. Superior oral biofilm control by this antiseptic combination has been proven in numerous scientific studies(1,2).
Perio•Aid® offers a product range that adapts to each of the periodontal treatment phases. First, we have Perio•Aid® Tratamiento, with 0.12% chlorhexidine and 0.05% cetylpyridinium chloride. It is recommended for at-home use during the active periodontal treatment phase, and as an aid after biofiom disruption performed by the dental practitioner. Patients must properly perform treatment in order to obtain optimal plaque control. This way, complete control of the bacterial load will be achieved, greatly improving clinical treatment outcome. Perio•Aid® Tratamiento is available in different forms: mouthwash, dental gel and spray (for more localised application). Because if its powerful antiseptic capacity, it can be used for a variety of different situations, explained in the previous article.
Secondly, we have Perio•Aid® Mantenimiento, containing 0.05% chlorhexidine and 0.05% cetylpyridinium chloride. Because this is a low chlorhexidine concentration, long-term use mouthrinse, it is generally used for the periodontal maintenance phase, and particularly during the first few months after treatment, when recurrence is most likely to occur, meaning that greater biofilm control is needed. Perio•Aid® Mantenimiento is available in mouthwash form.
The Halita® product range, for fighting bad breath, also contains 0.05% chlorhexidine in its formula, combined with 0.05% cetylpyridinium chloride and a zinc salt. This formula is scientifically backed by several studies that have shown its powerful capacity to reduce the biofilm that produces volatile sulphur compounds, while at the same time, inhibiting these malodorous compounds(3,4). Chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride destroy microorganisms and inhibit biofilm formation, while zinc lactate traps the volatile sulphur compounds.
This product should be used along with proper mechanical cleaning, for which the Halita® tongue cleaner can be used to remove lingual biofilm. The tongue cleaner has been proven to provide improved management of the biofilm found on the backmost areas of the tongue, by removing the substrate for volatile sulphur compound-producing bacteria(5).
The Halita® product range is composed of mouthwash and spray containing chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride and zinc lactate; and toothpaste containing cetylpyridinium chloride, xylitol and zinc lactate; and tongue cleaner.
