News for dentistry professionals
16 May 2012
Many times this stress derives from the lack of knowledge about the method s/he will endure. We must not forget that patients are not always familiar with dental anatomy and with the terminology that professionals use, meaning that they might not always completely understand what their problem really is and what the dental procedure will entail.
It has been found that dental models are very useful tools for helping professionals explain pathologies and dental procedures to their patients. They can be used for explaining the anatomy of the oral cavity (teeth, gums, bones…), as well as possible problems that can arise in the oral cavity. This physical support material makes things more understandable for patients, and can therefore reduce their level of anxiety. For example, there are models that show the processes of caries, gingivitis, periodontitis, and models that can clear up patients’ doubts by demonstrating the phases of implant insertion.
