Bruxism is the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth, a very common problem, since between 10% and 20% of the population suffers from this disorder..
However, as it is an unconscious habit, many do not realise they have it.
Identifying bruxism is very important since its treatment will help improve not only oral health but also general health, as the main symptoms of bruxism include:
• Are you under stress? Stress may cause physical symptoms to develop, and one of these may be nocturnal bruxism. A good way to limit this is by adopting a more relaxed lifestyle and avoiding situations that cause anxiety.
• Do you have headaches or ear pain? Jaw clenching at night may cause you to wake up with a headache and/or ear pain. Yet another of the symptoms that should make you suspect bruxism.
• Do you feel increased discomfort when eating hot and/or cold foods? If so, you may be experiencing tooth sensitivity. And it could be that the grinding of the teeth is wearing away the enamel, especially at the neck of the teeth, exposing the layer of dentin, ultimately causing tooth sensitivity.
• Are your gums inflamed or bleeding? Bruxism may in some cases cause localised recession of the gums. If this occurs, and hygiene is not properly maintained, inflammation of the gums may be enhanced by a greater accumulation of plaque at the exposed roots of the teeth.
• Do you suffer from insomnia? If you wake up in the middle of the night with jaw pain, you are probably experiencing bruxism.
If they answer yes to more than three questions, you should recommend they have a dental check-up, as they may be experiencing bruxism, and it is advisable they begin treatment in time to mitigate the negative effects on oral and general health.
Also remember that if your customers answer yes to the question on tooth sensitivity, you can recommend quality products to fight dental hypersensitivity at the pharmacy, differentiating you from other channels.
