WATER FLOSSING WITH SPECIFIC MOUTHWASHES HELPS IMPROVE PATIENTS’ ORAL HEALTH

News

24 Apr 2017

Waterpik® offers a full range of water flossers, electric brushes and electric flossers designed to maximize the ease and effectiveness of oral biofilm control.

Water flossing is a complement to tooth brushing. Waterpik® water flossers remove 99.9% of the dental biofilm ex vivo and allow plaque to be removed from hard-to-reach places thanks to the direct application of a pulsating stream of water or mouthwash.

The use of Waterpik® water flossers, combined with daily brushing:

  • Provides an unbeatable feeling of cleanliness and freshness
  • Removes dental plaque from hard-to-reach areas
  • Improves gum health
  • Eases the cleaning of crowns, implants and orthodontic appliances
  • Improves access to periodontal pockets (periodontitis)

In addition, for patients with special needs, such as those with orthodontic appliances, gum disease or systemic diseases, water may be replaced by the most appropriate mouthwash for each case, thus enhancing the effect of the mouthwash and of flossing..

The use of mouthwash allows active ingredients to remain in the mouth for longer periods and, when applied with a water flosser, it can more easily reach the subgingival and interproximal areas.

PATIENTS WITH ORTHODONTICS

Patients with orthodontic appliances should pay greater attention to their oral hygiene, as these appliances tend to harbour more oral biofilm build-up, which may lead to disease and complications: caries, gingivitis, halitosis, demineralisation of the enamel, white spots and sores or ulcerations.

Thanks to its composition based on cetylpyridinium chloride, sodium fluoride, allantoin and aloe vera, VITIS® orthodontic mouthwash helps:

  • Reduce oral biofilm build-up
  • Reduce gingival inflammation
  • Inhibit enamel demineralisation
  • Protect oral mucosa
  • Reduce discomfort during treatment

The use of water flossers makes it easy to clean hard-to-reach places, such as the space between brackets and wires or retainers, as well as in interproximal spaces.

HIGH-RISK DENTAL PATIENTS

High-risk patients are diabetics with inflamed or bleeding gums, those with cardiovascular disease and gum problems, or at risk of infection (immunocompromised patients, those undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy, etc.).

It is important to control the development of periodontal and/or peri-implant diseases in these patients through extremely thorough oral hygiene using mechanical methods such as toothbrushing, interproximal hygiene and water flossing, as well as with chemical products with formulations targeting gum problems.

To this end Perio·Aid® 0.05 Maintenance and Control, with a formula containing 0.05% chlorhexidine and 0.05% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), is the reference product. Its formulation with low concentration chlorhexidine and CPC has scientifically proven effectiveness for long-term daily use with minimal side effects.

Perio·Aid® 0.05 Maintenance and Control may be used in water flossers with 1-to-1 or 2-to-1 (water to mouthwash) dilutions. Thanks to this combination, the active ingredients can be applied directly, accessing difficult to reach areas.

PATIENTS WHO NEED TO PREVENT AND TREAT GINGIVITIS-INDUCED INFLAMMATION AND BLEEDING

The relationship between periodontal disease and systemic diseases makes prevention of gingivitis particularly important, both to prevent progression into periodontitis and to maintain good general health.

With patients such as pregnant women, cardiovascular patients or diabetics with healthy gums, it is important to reinforce oral hygiene measures to prevent and reduce gingival inflammation and bleeding.

In those cases, and for all patients with sensitive gums, applying VITIS® gingival, containing 0.05% cetylpyridinium chloride, panthenol and zinc lactate with the help of a water flosser can be recommended to enhance daily oral hygiene.
